Psalm 16:11(NIV) You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
The Bible clearly teaches that when God created humankind in His image and likeness, that He created them “male and female.”
Immediately afterwards, God commanded them to “Be fruitful and multiply…” In other words, the first command was to engage in the work of creation in imitation of God’s activity as Creator.
It is interesting to note that with the command to pro-create, God also attaches this creative activity with pleasure. If we are to take seriously the doctrine of the Imago-Dei (image of God), then we must conclude that for God, the divine act of creating is pleasurable.
In other words, all of creation (and especially sentient beings) are the result of a pleasurable activity within the divine.
The Bible says that “God is Love.” (1John 4:8) Human beings are brought into existence through divine erotic love (Eros), but then sustained through the deeper modes of divine love, these being:
- Agape (unselfish love),
- Philia (philial or brotherly love),
- Ludus (playful love),
- Pragma (practical love), and
- Philauta (love of self).
Although the Human soul is similar in its qualities to the souls of other sentient beings, only the Human soul has the ability to understand in a limited sense the different potencies, or energies (attributes) of the divine.
So next time you look at yourself- remember, that you are a product of divine pleasure. He cannot BUT love you!
