Since the day of my ordination 17 years ago, I have been uttering the most sacred words a sentient being could ever utter…
The VERBUM, or The “WORDS” of Institution. The foundation of Holy Communion. The sacred words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, uttered on the night He gave His soul and body to be our expiatory sacrifice. The Lamb of God, the Holy Mystery of how the Creator was victimized and killed by its creation, in order to raise fallen humanity to the very Throne of God; co-ruling the Universes as Ambassadors over His New Creation. Christ has opened up a clear path through His Passion that teaches humanity how it can raise itself to the office of “Sons of the Most High God.”
Disciples of the Eternal Word that created the Universes. His knowledge with His presence in us, living through us and executing His perfect will through us. Angels, in fact, representing God for all eternity in a new cycle of destruction and re-creation.
Those words make present the eternal sound vibrations that proceeded from the mouth of our Master. His Words, His Verbum…repeated time, after time, after time; echoing the Lord, the voice of the Pastor being a medium through which Christ (who is present in His words) makes Himself present in the ears of the hearers through the voice of the Pastor.
“Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples and said: ‘Take and eat, This is My Body+ which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.'”
“In the same way he took the cup after supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to his disciples and said: ‘Drink of it all of you. This cup is the New Testament in My Blood+ which is shed for you, for the forgiveness of sins. This do as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.'”
At that moment, Christ is speaking through me to His people. I am a channel of His grace to the ears and hearts of the hearers.
That eternal night made present through my vocal chords and gestures.
Every Communion- I play the role of Christ, and you the role of the Apostles. We are mystically there in that eternal night… The Apostles living through us in that eternal Communion of the Saints.
They are we and we are they, reliving the Passion of Christ. Eternally making it Anamneses, a living remembrance, where the past is made present, and the present, past. Eternally connected through the participation of the One Loaf…the One Meal. Disciples of all ages, united in the Passion of our Master and the glories of His resurrection.
My vocation… To be the vocal sound of my Master’s eternal words. What an honor.
