Isaiah 45:7 (ESV)- I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create calamity, I am the LORD, who does all these things.
Ultimately everything is created by God, whether “directly” or “indirectly.” Everything is sustained by God’s Word… Everything requires God’s will… including you taking this moment to read this article. God’s will is inescapable, regardless of the “agent” or “vessel” that makes something happen. (Romans 9:14-24)
Have you ever heard of the term: “The Buck Stops Here?” The “Buck” begins and ends with God- and most of the time for reasons that transcend us. This is why the LORD says Lamentations 3:37-38 KJV
“Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not? Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?”
The word translated as “evil” is the Hebrew word הָרָע֖וֹת (ha-ra-owt) from the root word רָע (ra’- Strong’s #7451) which literally means “bad, disagreeable, evil, and misery.”
This is a hard teaching for those who only ascribe to God a “permissive will” in regards to evil, while allowing for God to “decree” everything lovely and good. Unfortunately, that is not what the Scriptures teach in regards to God’s total control (sovereignty) over everything that lives, breathes, exists and dies- whether material or spiritual.
When Moses resisted God’s call to be His prophet, God answered from the Burning Bush:
“Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD?” (Exodus 4:11)
To ascribe the ability to “create evil” to an “agent” outside of God’s creative quality is to steal the ultimate “glory” from God. Soli Deo Gloria!
Humans usually try to mold ‘gods’ according to what is palatable to them at the time. Whenever we fashion a god according to our preferences, rather than accepting God’s transcendental, self-revelation as ultimate Truth, we create an IDOL. Some IDOLS are fashioned with our hands… others are fashioned by our doctrines… but regardless of how they are expressed, IDOLS are always figments of the human imagination.
The True God transcends human imagination, always. In fact, if we accept God as God, even the evil that He creates in our lives will ultimately serve for a GOOD purpose.
Romans 8:28 (KJV)- And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Let us avoid trying to justify God by means of our mental speculations. God is God- and all the glory goes to Him, even if God uses Satan as an “agent” who seems to create it. Ultimately, even the most evil of things that we cannot bare, will serve as the point of demarcation between those who choose to love God, and those who choose to hate Him.
The proverbial “buck” begins and ends with God- which is why the Incarnate Word of God (his creative and sustaining agent) took responsibility for our Sin and suffered the ultimate penalty of death on the Cross… but that’s an even harder “pill” to swallow.
