I utterly reject the accusation that I am “homophobic.” On the contrary, I have great compassion and love for true homosexuals.
I readily recognize that my writings in defense of Biblical marriage and Christian sexuality might seem rough and uncultured in an era of compromise and erosion of Biblical principles. I can see how some of my statements against gay “marriage” can be interpreted as “homophobic.”
On the other hand, if you’re going to read my opinions once in a while, I want you to know that as a Pastor, I am very methodic and careful with my word selection… Even when I sound crass and vulgar to the aristocratically refined, I usually use my words strategically. Although sometimes, I do make mistakes and make poor word selections.
You will notice the following: I NEVER condemn homosexuals. The Bible condemns HOMOSEXUAL ACTS… not persons who struggle with homosexuality.
There are countless persons out there…good persons, that are arduously trying to accommodate a homosexual expression of life into the Bible; claiming that since the Bible only speaks about homosexuality outside of the bounds of “marriage,” that our 21st Century situation (or innovation) is unique, and therefore, justified. It’s not.
Dear friends… there’s nothing “unique” about the 21st century besides our technology. Human beings remain just as cruel, just as violent, just as selfish…even worse than 2,000 years ago. At least 2,000 years ago, most of the world believed that some expression of the Divine would hold them accountable for not treating other humans with dignity!
Many in the West defy that foundational, human principle; licensing themselves to live a selfish lifestyle that reflects the axiom: “Do what thou wilt.”
In any case- the point of this little essay is to tell you that just as I believe that homosexual ACTS are sinful… I also believe that my own acts of gluttony, drunkenness, pride, anger, lust, and impatience…are also just as sinful.
For every finger I point, there are four pointing right back at me. Ok.. 6 fingers. 😉
The Bible says in Romans 6:13 ESV–
Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
I confess, I sometimes present my stomach to sin as an instrument for unrighteousness when I over eat, or over drink. I confess, I sometimes present my tongue as an instrument of unrighteousness when I speak ill of a person, or complain about my petty struggles in life. I have also presented my middle finger as an instrument of unrighteousness in the past (not so much now), when someone has cut me off the road and intended to kill me on the highway.
Fact is… we are all bound to a sinful body where sin dwells- even though our hearts and spirits have been renewed through Holy Baptism. (Romans 7:15-20; Titus 3:4-6; 1John 5:18)
But although we all feel inclined to do what is “contrary to nature” once in a while (Romans 1:26), this doesn’t mean that we should give ourselves to these inclinations!
Why? The answer is simple: LOVE.
God created human beings to live, move and have their being in His ordered universe. All of creation has a design…and everything (even the appendix) has a purpose. God is a god of order…without order, there would be no UNI-verse.
God wants for us to love Him to the point, that we are willing to not live according to our personal inclinations (whatever they may be), and struggle to live according to the order and purposes that He has established. That means, that we will all suffer in the process of choosing to live according to God’s design, out of love for the god who loves us and gives us life, freely.
This is why the Bible says that Christians should no longer live for themselves, but live for the sake of him who saved us on the Cross. (2 Corinthians 5:15) One day we will all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, in order to receive what is due for what we have done IN THE BODY, whether good or evil. (2 Corinthians 5:10)
In an age where Christians are getting slaughtered, raped and persecuted like never before, I cannot compromise with the rising lack of spiritual discipline that has overtaken the Western hemisphere. There is no place in Christianity for a lifestyle (whether homosexual or gluttonous) that seeks to justify and indulge our sinful inclinations…
This is what Colossians 3: 1-10 says:
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming…But now you must put them all away; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
God forbid that I should condemn my Christian brothers and sisters that truly struggle with homosexuality, or whatever other sin that WE commit. God is love (1John 4:8) and we are saved by Grace (Eph. 2:8-10).
But in the Church of Jesus Christ, there is no place for acts that are contrary to the divine order established in the UNI-verse…including my own gluttony and anger… or your own, occasional acts of fornication, whether homosexual or heterosexual.
God is love… We demonstrate our love for Him by means of trying our best to fulfill His commandments. (John 14:21) God never rejects a humble and contrite heart. (Psalm 51:17) Never…
I love homosexuals.
